The Bride

The Most Important Dress You'll Ever Buy

They say a wedding dress is like a groom: though it may take you a long time, you'll know when you've found 'The One'.

How much

According to a recent survey, the average UK wedding dress costs around £900, but they come in at anywhere between £50 and £3000 plus. The price depends on a number of factors including fabric, pattern, the brand, intricate details and the exclusivity of the gown. What you pay reflects not only the dress itself but also the lovely surroundings and personal attention and advice you should receive in the salon. Remember that all the extras; veil, tiara, train, shoes etc usually come as expensive additions to the cost of the dress. Alterations are usually extra and the salon should give you a clear idea of what this is likely to cost. Most bridal shops ask for 50% deposit when you place the order, and expect the balance when the dress arrives. As a tip, pay for your dress with a credit card rather than cash, this is a safer route. If something happens you're covered - for example the bridal salon goes bust.

Wear The Dream

You may not have a specific theme in mind for your wedding day - in fact many brides use the dress itself to shape or determine the look and style of the celebration. If your venue shouts modern, understated, sophistication, you aren't going to turn up in a fluffy fairytale dress? The venue shouldn't dictate what you wear, but it is worth considering the context.

As well as the location and tone of your wedding, the time of year can also affect your dress choice. Lighter materials are more comfortable for summer or destination weddings, whereas boleros, jackets and capes can look fabulous and keep you nice and warm at a winter wedding.

Dress Shopping With A Friend

Think carefully about who you take with you. Choose friends whose opinions you trust, people you're confident will be honest with you and preferably with similar tastes. It's probably best not to take more than one or two people on the same visit, especially the early ones - too many opinions create confusion. In the end all you need from your friendly helpers is reassurance and the confidence to go with your gut instinct.

Ordering Your Dress

The most important thing to remember about timing is that after ordering your dress, it will take between three and six months to arrive at the salon. It is also important to allow plenty of time for alterations.
